Under the direct supervision of the Food Services Supervisor, the TryMe's Instructor runs the Tryme's Cafe in the University of Chicago's Social Service Administration Building. Responsible for supervising three youth staff members. Maintains state and city health code compliance. Effective use of written and oral communication skills. Excellent customer service skills. Effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.


Responsible for daily management of the cafe including staffing, inventory of products, setting up and closing the cafe.

Marketing Tryme's services following approved agency guidelines to the University of Chicago campus

Completes all required training for coffee, espresso, and tea equipment

Responsible for managing the funds earned for the Tryme's Cafe

Clean cafe and food preparation area and maintain cleaning schedule according to sanitary regulations

Provide on-going youth staff supervision to determine functioning level and the ability to complete task assignments.

Responsible for training youth staff members

Discuss with students, on a regular basis, progress being made within the program and areas for improvement

Presents self and agency in a professional manner

Knowledge of basic computer skills and ability to communicate effectively via email.

Ability to build relationships with a variety of youth in order to teach basic food service skills in a therapeutic environment.

Demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement in all aspects of the position

Participates in the development and implementation of continuous quality improvement activities as assigned.

Ability to work a flexible schedule to coincide with University events

Ability to work effectively with clients and staff in a culturally diverse environment.

May perform other duties as assigned.


Must be 21 years of age

High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience managing a cafe or food service operation preferable

At least two (2) years experience in food services or culinary arts

Current Food Service Sanitation (State and City) Certification

Must have a valid Illinois driver's license

No history of child abuse or neglect
