Under the direct supervision of the Food Services Supervisor, the Culinary Arts TryMe's Instructor develops and implements a culinary arts curriculum for youth in the Therapeutic Day School and the Child and Family Treatment Center. Maintains state and city health code compliance in the Tryme's area. Responsible for coordinating and overseeing all catering events organized by Tryme's, maintaining a flexible schedule to accommodate catering events as needed. Effective use of written or oral communication skills. Effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Use of crisis intervention techniques (both verbal and physical). Physical intervention requires the ability to kneel and return to standing without assistance. Assists supervisor in all aspects of food service program for Lawrence Hall, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying supplies. Ability to lift 50lbs.


  • Serve meals to clients, staff and visitors in a palatable presentation and record meals served for department records
  • Plan, prepare and implement daily lessons utilizing a curriculum notebook of subject materials and instructor-made projects
  • Organizing and managing the services and student workers at all catering events
  • Marketing Tryme's services both internally and externally following approved agency guidelines
  • Managing the funds paid for Tryme's meals/catering events following approved agency guidelines
  • Clean Tryme's area and maintain cleaning schedule according to sanitary regulations
  • Responsible for physical management of students requiring additional control as described in Agency policy on use of physical restraint.
  • May be required to transport students on field trips, between agency facilities, etc. in agency vehicle/van.
  • Provide on-going client/student supervision to determine functioning level and the ability to complete task assignments.
  • Use special education materials and methods combined with traditional concepts as needed.
  • Discuss with students, on a regular basis, progress being made within the program. This includes quarterly student evaluations
  • Maintain records, writes reports, participates in study groups and keeps accountable for classroom progress.
  • Utilize educational and behavioral strategies to prevent escalation of problems and negative feelings.
  • Work collaboratively with all agency departments to coordinate events, encourage student progress and coordinate structured activities during times when school is out of session.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and ability to communicate effectively via email.
  • Ability to build relationships with a variety of clients at various academic and developmental levels in order to teach basic food service skills in a therapeutic environment.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement in all aspects of the position
  • Participates in the development and implementation of continuous quality improvement activities as assigned.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients and staff in a culturally diverse environment.


  • Must be 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least two (2) years experience in food services or culinary arts
  • Current Food Service Sanitation (State and City) Certification
  • Must have a valid Illinois driver's license
  • No history of child abuse or neglect
