Reports to the Supervisor of Health Services to perform assigned functions. Moves between all agency locations to respond to client medical emergencies during the workday. Flexibility to adjust tasks and schedule according to medical department needs as well as adjusting to the work schedule and the needs of the program. Ability to access and maintain confidentiality of client records and information. Provide medications as prescribed and monitor signed medication sheets. Administer CPR and first aid to Lawrence Hall residents/students. Uses effective oral and written communication with clients, agency staff DCFS and outside medical personnel. Effective use of both verbal and non-verbal intervention techniques. Use of verbal and physical intervention skills with clients weighing a minimum of 50lbs. Physical intervention requires the ability to kneel and return to standing without assistance. Use of telephone, computer and standard office machines. Transports clients in agency vehicle/van. Requires flexibility to adjust to work schedule according to the needs of the program.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direct nursing care to residents/students as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Creates, and maintains records related to medical care given to the resident/student; files client medical records and writes reports as assigned.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of residents/student health status, issues and concerns notifies supervisor immediately if any change occurs.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of any other agency staff issues or concerns related to resident/student health or safety issues.
  • Communicates with department staff on an ongoing basis daily
  • Provides medications on time during school hours to residents/students as prescribed.
  • Provide summary and discharge information for client files.
  • Records medical appointments needed for residents as required.
  • Assists with monitoring signed medication sheets returned to Health Services.
  • Tracking and updating DCFS, Parent/Guardian, Client, or other party consents to Psychotropic medications.
  • Assists in making rounds to agency residential homes to attend team meeting and inventory first aid kits as well as function as liaison for the medical department and attend team meeting .
  • May be required to safely transport residents to and from health care providers in agency vehicles
  • Relates medical information and transactions to the supervisor of health services
  • Responsible for appropriate and legal parking of agency vehicles and preventing driving/parking violations.
  • Assist in medication review with psychiatrist when assigned.
  • Participation in health education groups/training for residents/students and staff.
  • Act as liaison to an array of DCFS staff, and community health and social service providers
  • Assists in coordinating new client medical needs
  • Complete weekly entries into the Child Serve Computer Program
  • Ability to work effectively with clients and staff in a culturally diverse environment
  • Good attendance and punctuality
  • Participates in the development and implementation of continuous quality improvement activities as assigned
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement in all aspects of the position

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of an accredited practical nurse training course and possession of a valid Illinois RN or Practical Nursing License
  • Certified to administer medications
  • CPR certification required or attend Agency's CPR training
  • Experience in Psychiatric, pediatric, and gynecological nursing desired
  • Must have a valid Illinois drivers license with no suspensions in effect within the previous three years of hire
  • No record of child abuse or neglect
